Tamara Dobson, one of the great stars of the 1970s, returned to the ancestors last week after a battle with Multiple Sclerosis and pneumonia. Best known for her starring role in “Cleopatra Jones,” Dobson helped define the blaxploitation era. With her 6 foot 2 frame, beautiful face, and “take no prisoners” attitude, Dobson also challenged popular conceptions of who and what a Black woman could be in Hollywood. Although Pam Grier gets the lion share of the credit, today’s actresses and models owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Tamara Dobson for her pioneering work.

May she rest in peace.
