20 Questions
December 3, 2009 by Marc Lamont Hill

Once again, my strange little mind is filled with random questions. Here are some of them:
Do Bush haters feel better now that a smart Democrat prosecuting an unnecessary war?
Why do women upgrade from Bud Lite to Belvedere when you offer to buy them a drink?
Doesn’t the White House crasher scandal only increase our fears that President Obama isn’t being properly protected?
Didn’t we almost believe Tiger Woods wasn’t Black after he told the cops he wasn’t talking to them?
Didn’t we get a sharp reminder after yesterday’s media circus?
Isn’t it unfair that most of the people trashing Sarah Palin’s new book haven’t read it?
Doesn’t Obama’s notion of a “jobless economic recovery” sound as absurd as an “eggless omelet?”
Would anyone still be talking about Taylor Swift if Kanye hadn’t stolen her shine at the MTV Awards?
Isn’t it sad that liberal cities like New York keep rejecting gay marriage?
Wouldn’t it have been nice if Dick Cheney had been this vocal about war strategy when he was Vice President?
Since we’ve seen Dangerous Minds, Finding Forrester, Freedom Writers and countless other films about nice white people saving downtrodden Negroes, did “Blindside” really need to be made?
Now that Allen Iverson is back in Philadelphia, will stock in TGI Fridays, Spalding, and Trojan go up?
Wouldn’t it be great if 50 Cent’s music were still as entertaining as his extracurricular activities?
Where did all of these New Orleans Saints fans come from?
Doesn’t Precious feel a bit like “poverty porn”?
Are there any hip-hop albums better than Raekwon’s and Jay-Z’s this year?
Where was I the day they were giving late night talk shows to black people?
White people with dreadlocks… Why?
Has anyone seen Terrell Owens?

Agreed on almost all… but the Royce Da 5′9 and Skyzoo albums were better than Jay’s in my humble opinion.

As a Bush hater I must say I am beginning not to be much of a Obama lover. He compromises too much and has apparently let Goldman Sachs take over the Treasury Dept. Can we ever not be at war, get universal health care, take real measures to lead the world in renewable energy, end traditional schooling, make college accessible to everyone, quit worrying about big gov’t and end big business? Or is all that just too much for the most prosperous country ever?

Oh yeah and maybe we should redefine what it means to be liberal or progressive. I label myself as an independent but still you can’t call yourself liberal or progressive if you vote down gay marriage(New York &California) and busing to desegregate (Seattle). The political spectrum has really become tainted. People think a public OPTION with an opt out for states is liberal! That is a clear center-right policy. Rachel Maddow did a great job breaking it down. Liberal is what Canada and the UK have. A public option is centrist. The democratic party is center-right as Bill Maher said, and the Republicans should be replaced by the gang of 4: Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Joseph Cao, and Ron Paul. I don’t agree with them on everything but they represent the people and are reasonable.

Yes. Beautiful voice. Thoughtful lyrics.
Question: Would anyone still be talking about Kanye West if not for his narcissistic and childish outbursts?

I don’t find his music or extracurricular activities entertaining anymore. What the hell happened to him? This can’t be the same guy to wrote “How To Rob.” I want grimy but clever from him not and rich and horny. verything since his first album has been such a yawn.

Marc your perspective on The Blind Side is kind of disappointing. Did you the book Michael Oher wrote that is the basis of the film? I have read so many articles with people sharing the same viewpoint that his story is another in a line of films that show white people in a savior role with a black character but its clear to me that the critics never read his book. Why are none of the critics upset that he had nowhere to turn when he was at his worst struggles? People want to get mad because a white family helped him make it but why isn’t anyone upset that there was not one black family who were willing to do the same? If anything his story should motivate black folks to look for the potential in each other not just who you think a person is at one moment in time. It’s so easy to look at the Tuhoy’s with disdain when they stepped up when everyone else in Michael’s life turned him away.
