This is a identity politics fantasy of the academic left. Out in the real world 3 out 4 Latinos voted for Hillary here in California. In Oakland when latino immigrants massively hit the streets against the Sensebrenner bill about 1- 2 years ago, maybe out of 20,000 protesters 10 were black (with the 5 or so counter-protesters also being black). And we went through heavily black east Oakland.

last night I saw Dan Savage speak at Penn and the long, slow process of being convinced to vote for Obama came to a head. I may still vote for nader in the general, but i think i’ve been swung the way of the roaring crowd.

whether i believe in obama’s plan or not, whether i think any random obama-phile can actually cite 3 things obama will do in his first 100 days, whether i realize this whole thing is the most sweeping example of public hype since reagan, i do see that he does bring all sorts of people together and he does seem like he’s a smart, well-meaning, reasonable dude. so if people are going to be riotously swept up like Poison groupies about a Presidential candidate, he might as well be a smart, well-meaning, reasonable dude.
