I Love New York – My Thoughts

Ok, I watched it.

After weeks of debating with myself, I finally gave in and watched VH1’s latest coon extravaganza, “I Love New York.” Don’t worry, I fully intend to honor my promise and not provide weekly updates of the show. In fact, based on what I saw, I’m uncertain if the show will even attract enough viewers to stay on the air, much less warrant a weekly post.

Here are a few quick thoughts on the show:

It seemed that a large number of the show’s contestants look openly gay, desperate for camera time, or completely uninterested in New York? This is noteworthy for two reasons. First, it foregrounds the idea that this is not a serious reality show (oxymoronic, I know), but a spectacle pro wrestling-like spectacle that requires the complete suspension of disbelief. While all reality shows inevitably require some level of “kayfabe,” the unabashed carnivalesque nature of last night’s episode indexes a dramatic shift from its “Surreal Life” roots. Second, by representing all of New York’s suitors as inauthentic, the show reinforces the notion that Black women cannot be legitimate subjects of desire who are worth pursuing in full public view.
Until last night, I didn’t realize that New York’s mother would be in every episode. It seems like the folks at VH1 don’t think that New York can carry her own show.
It’s still unclear to me how much of her mom’s antics are for the camera and how much is pure crazy.
Is it me or did Mr. Boston sound like Gilbert Godfrey?
What was more embarrassing, New York’s conflation of “negrita” and “niggerita”, or, after being told that “negrita” is a common term in Latin countries, her saying that she “wasn’t from Latin”?
Why did they have to have to keep showing he dark skinned brother with the perm and the bright pink lips?
Wasn’t foul how she dismissed the brothers by saying “You’re just not good enough for me?”
Does anyone but Chance seem to have a legitimate shot at winning?

Hopefully, they’ll keep airing the show on Monday nights so that it will get cancelled sooner than later.
