Today’s photo of the day shows Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his Co-D, Christine Beatty, after being booked. Kilpatrick faces up to 90 years in jail for perjury. Should he fight to keep his office or just resign?

Although Mr Kwame is about as transparent as freezer bag, do his actions really warrent 90 years!? That is quite excessive.

Despite the scandal, I see alot of positive initiatives coming from his administration. I also like how he has handled himself in the aftermath of all of the chaos. He seems like the type that does his best work when under fire. Sex and the race to cover it up seems like the death sentence in politics.

He’s facing 90 years because he was charged with about 8 felonies including obstruction of justice and misconduct in office. He does need to resign but he wont. He would rather face these charges as a mayor than as a private citizen. Also, while I don’t know the full extent of the good that he has done for Detroit, I don’t think it outweighs firing 3 police officers to cover up for his fling and parties filled with strippers. Not to mention the $8 million the city had to pay as a result of the related lawsuit. It’s also extremely creepy that the stripper in the center of this whole controversy was murdered 2 weeks after the party that he tried to cover-up.

Cosign jazzy. Kwame’s situation is a mess and he is the only one that could’ve stopped this circus. I saw his press conference with his wife and he said something that was really interesting. He stated that this happened years ago and he had already addressed it with his wife, so if his wife knew about this years ago why lie about it on the stand? Why allegedly fire some cops who were about to blow up his spot and then pay them off? If everything were truly on the up and up as he claimed then it would make no sense to lie.

He brought this on himself and I think he should resign despite some of the good things Detroit residents have said about his impact on the city since his election. I know people cheat all of the time so I’m definitely not throwing salt in that direction, but Kwame needs to understand that his credibility is now shot and this is about more than dipping out in your wife, it’s about can the people who put you in office continue to trust you. What is the point of taking an oath to be honest in a courtroom, then go ahead and lie and think nothing will come of this? Apparently he’s never heard of Lil Kim, Barry Bonds, John Browne of BP, Scooter Libby, and possibly Roger Clemens. Kwame could’ve easily avoided all of this but he chose another route and now his office will be under scrutiny as long as he is the mayor.
