Photo of the Day
July 31, 2008 by Marc Lamont Hill
Today’s photo of the day, which comes from SandraRose (and AllHipHop.com), shows a recent restaurant bill paid by Andre 3000. According to reports, Three Stacks got all types of special treatment from the restaurant, but didn’t leave any money for a tip. Even more curious is his decision to write “Thanks!” at the top of the bill. Personally, I don’t know (or care) if the story is true. Rather, I’m more fascinated by the increasing levels of surveillance that are enable through digital technologies.
Tangential question: How much should he have left? Would it be different if he weren’t a celebrity?

Can’t see the picture but who cares? I don’t see what the big deal is about the size of the tip you leave. People are always quick to talk shit about people who don’t tip enough but its not like it’s mandatory. If it was why not just tack on a gratuity charge to the bill (like some places do)

i agree. I thought tips were for excellent service (first of all).
and secondly, maybe he gave the guy the tip instead of writing it in on the bill, maybe he was rushing and had to leave in a hurry, maybe it’s just some bullshit…

You can always tell who has had to work in a restaurant at some point in their lives and who hasn’t. Typically gratuity charges are added on parties of 5 or more. Of course tipping isn’t mandatory, which is why the punishment for not tipping (or tipping poorly) is simply getting shit talked on you instead of being kicked out of or banned from the establishment.
I can’t see the picture either, but the standard is 18-20% for good service. I used to bus tables at a restaurant in Philly and Donovan McNabb came in and tipped the bill. Chase Utley came in another night and tipped 50%. Celebrities generally do tip more generously, but if 3k had tipped the standard I don’t think anybody would have a problem. Was it an outlandish order or something? I mean if he didn’t ask for the special treatment, it’s not as big a deal. Though it’s still in poor taste to stonewall them like that.

I usually tip 20% if the service is at least decent (plus the math is easy). Most waiters make less than minimum wage because it is understood that they will receive tips. If leaving a tip is going to break your budget then take yo ass to Mickey D’s.

i cant see the image either but something tells me he probably put cash in the waiters hands. at some restaurants waiters have to split their tips with the rest of the staff. if it was a pretty large tip and waiters make $2.17 an hour, would you split your big tip with 50 people? or pretend you got stiffed?

if i’ve got enough money to go to a place and get waited on, as long as i’m not breaking some kind of cultural taboo, i tip well no matter what the service or the food was like. if i didn’t like the service, the food, the poetry in the bathroom stalls, i simply never return. ever.
oh, and i never tip less 5 dollars, even if i’m by myself at a diner. if the bill is 8 dollars, i pay 13. if the bill is 300, i’d pay 360.

that’s good for those that tip…but fuck that, whether i’m at some nice restaurant or at denny’s, if they take too long for to get me my refill….fuck em!

clifton, with that attitude, i wouldn’t risk going back to the same restaraunt ever again. liable to get something in your coffee that you really didn’t want. not to mention the permanent effects on your karma. incidentally, denny’s is the latest to join my list of no-gos.

I can see if the service is purposely bad, maybe tipping 15%. But sometimes its gets busy, have some patience.

I had my share of waiter jobs so I always tip unless the service is completely unbearable.

i was jokin…sort of. If they are slow with the refills, they get the standard ten percent for me..if they great, 20%, and if they are so rude that i have to complain..they get the clif special, a penny and a happy face on the receipt!! (and i never return of course)

I need to see it before I comment. (I’ll check out allhiphop.com later)
But usually 20% is the very minimum I tip. I only eat at the same few places over and over (I’m brand loyal & like routine). So I have to tip really well b/c I’ll be right back the next day; and I like special treatment!
(On another tangent: I’ve experienced tipping drama like never before with a friend of a friend who “tipped” too much (money that is)!!! – That was a crazy night; I will never go out with him again!)

I’ve actually done what some people have suggested might have happened here … paid my bill with a credit card but given my tip in cash directly to the waiter.
Usually it’s when someone has gone above and beyond and I want to personally thank them for their efforts.

What was that Steve Buscemi’s character said about tipping in “Reservoir Dogs”?

I follow the standard tip chart:
A service level = 20% tip
B service level = 15% tip
C level service = 10% tip
here is the tip chart online that you can keep in your wallet:
