Photo of the Day
December 26, 2008 by Marc Lamont Hill
Today’s photo of the day shows the incomparable Eartha Kitt, who passed away yesterday after a battle with colon cancer. From her classic rendition of “Santa Baby” to her award-winning roles on film, stage, and television, Ms. Kitt represents the best of our tradition. She will be sorely missed. R.I.P.

RIP. To me she was like the female version of Gordon Parks, like him there was no artistic medium that seemed outside of her scope. A true talent.

I was saddened to hear about this. I had the pleasure of seeing Ms. kitt in a play & doing her night club act just a few years ago…..She told us at that time she was 77 years old, so that would have been 4 years ago…..I was amazed that she could kick so high and fulfill the physical demands of her act. I don’t think I could have done all that. She was a good role model, & she displayed courage in speaking out against the Vietnam war. R.I.P. Ms Kitt!

a crazy year indeed DC.
you know what Doc? you should’ve posted a video with one (or several) of Ms. Kitt’s sexy, elegant, and fierce performances. that would’ve been a real treat.
i freakin’ love her Grrrrrr…

It almost seems like it’s not Christmas unless a black celebrity dies. Why does this happen every year?

Wow Blaxx, that would be very odd!
I don’t remember, who died last Christmas again?

I performed in an ballet production at the Kennedy Center in Christmas of ‘01, and guess who I saw backstage – Ms. Eartha Kitt!!! Everyone was so excited to meet her. She had such a great spirit about her (a very seductive spirit at that, lol).
I can’t believe she has died. She seemed like one of the types to make it to 100!
She was a legend in her own rite! RIP Ms. Kitt!

I saw her in the play version of Cinderella when it was in Philly years ago. She played the fairy godmother. This woman outshone Cinderella AND the man in drag!!!
The woman is fierce.
Hey… Does this mean my book with her autograph will be worth something?
