Photo of the Day
August 6, 2009 by Marc Lamont Hill
Today’s photo of the day shows Euna Lee and Laura Ling returning home to their families. It will be interesting to see how this incident enable Kim Jong-il to re-brand himself amongst the North Korean people. Also, I’m wondering if the use of Bill Clinton in an “unofficial capacity” enabled President Obama to engage in the type of bilateral diplomacy that he promised during his campaign without drawing the ire of increasingly unhappy voters. All of that aside, this is a great moment for the Lee and Ling families, the Obama Administration, and the broader American public.

I am so happy that this situation turned out so positive although I am skeptical at what promises were made to NK for the release of Ling and Lee. Either way, I was in tears yesterday morning watching Lee hug her daughter for the first time in 5 months. I cant even begin to imagine how tramatic of an experience that was for them and their families.

Indeed Sammy. I still can’t believe they had rocks and rice, what’s that about??? That’s real hard time! Note to self: never go to NK, ever!

It brought tears to my eyes. I was floored when I heard who went over there and got them out, but then, who has more freedom and influence then an ex-president when it comes to world affairs? They have the connections without the presidential motorcade carrying the secret service and the slue or reporters dogging their every step. I’m personally happy that Obama would be smart enough to use his connections. I can’t believe how the people are turning this into a completely negative situation. How in the WORLD can Hillary be in two places at once? Am I remembering correctly when I think I heard she was in Somalia at the same time her husband was with Kim? She’s not superwomen….who decides which is more important then the other? Because we have a secretary of state does that mean that no one other then that appointed person can handle foreign affairs? Can someone brush me up?

I agree with you Sandra and if you take a look at Jimmy Carter’s post-presidential career he engaged in years of diplomacy on behalf of the US all on his own. None of the presidents from Reagan on down who benefited from what Carter did during their administrations were viewed negatively nor were the Secretary’s of State.

I do agree that this was a great site to behold. Tears welled in ma eyes. I wanted them to flow but they didn’t. To see that little girl who was drawing images of her and the dad alone was shocking. Now her mom that was on the business trip is back. The real winners Hillary and Bill Clinton.
