should’ve made it but didn’t-( LL, Dre 3000 is not a solo rapper IMO but if he was he would’ve made it, Lauryn needs a second album or she would’ve made it, Lyte pre-96 was on this list AND Busta is a combination of all of the above and just misses my top 5)

Most will likely disagree with my list as many of the artists I’ll list aren’t necessarily popular or well-accomplished:
1. Common
2. Andre 3000
3. Talib Kweli
4. Black Thought
5. MF Doom
I know I am privileging the new guard here and not acknowledging the legends, but, honestly, I’ve always felt that Rakim was overrated (most of the praise for Rakim is tied into him being the first to bring complex rhyme schemes, not necessarily his being the best to do so). My list shouldn’t be seen as disregard for the old school but more about consistency.

I cant believe immortal technique has not been in any list.
Also Drake Rogers is a great rapper.
For lyrical talent and flow Sway from the UK has to be talked about.
1:BIG- His voice adds new depth by being a beat as well as a story telling metaphoric genius.
2:Immortal Tech- He is DEEP with amazing dialect.
3:2Pac- Such a talent, his way of describing a situation he has been in truly shows his emotion at the time.
4:JayZ- Metaphoric master, voice makes him unique and he tears up tracks he only has a feature on.
5:Drake Rogers- His flow and chilled out attitude make him easy to listen to and his complex metaphors are fresh. New skool without forgetting the past
