Remembering Katrina
August 29, 2006 by Marc Lamont Hill

Today marks the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the worst natural disaster in our nation’s history. Given America’s propensity for forgetting the atrocities that it commits against Black people, it is critical that we always remember the willful ignorance, remarkable incompetence, and vicious indifference that conspired to create hell on earth for New Orleans’ most vulnerable denizens. Let us use this day to celebrate the memories and spirits of those who were left behind. Let us also use this day to roll up our sleeves and begin curing the social maladies that unnecessarily intensified human suffering.

With all due respect, Dr. Hill, I believe the hurricane that hit Galveston in the early 1900s was the worst natural disaster in U.S. history.
More than 6,000 people were killed in that storm and the entire city was leveled.

I disagree, John. To be sure Galveston had a higher body count –some estimate it as high as 10,000 people. Still, in terms of the sheer ferocity of the storm, as well as the cost of the damage ($200 billion) Katrina looms large.

I am a little proud of Nagin, though. The news this morning reported that he had the balls to tell Bush he firmly believes that if this had happened to wealthy white neighborhoods the recovery would be completed already.
Bush disagreed.
Most people who are allowed access to the Prez are carefully shepherded and given lists of what is and is not acceptable to discuss. I guess Nagin did’t get the list or just didn’t care.

Nagin is just telling it like it is and people, especially white folk, don’t like to hear it. I’m proud of him also Omo.

Wow. Do you have proof of this direct correlation b/w Katrina victims and crime in *fill in your city here*?

Nina,
Is that the best solution you can come up with? Relocating back to New Orleans? I’m sure you can do better than that. Step outside of your comfort zone for a minute and put yourself in the shoes of the hundreds of thousands of human beings who were, through no fault of their own, forcibly removed from their homes, their belongings, their clothing, their pets, their keepsakes, their city and all of the memories that are there. And then imagine yourself returning to a demolished and/or mold-ridden home, no job, no school to send your children to and rent that is double or triple what it was when the levees were breached.
Then get back to us on what you think the solution to the NOLA criminal element should be.

DAMN I’M SORRY, I DIDN’T MEAN TO STEP ON ANYONE’S TOES.
I JUST MEAN,
WE ALREADY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS AND NORTHERNERS RELOCATING HERE, WHY ADD MORE FUEL TO THE FIRE.
I JUST MEANT THE SINCE PEOPLE WERE RELOCATED HERE, CRIME SHOT UP. I DIDN’T MEAN TO PLACE 100% ON BLAME THEM. SORRY!
