Tonight at Kent State

April 16, 2009 by Marc Lamont Hill

Tonight, I’ll be appearing at Kent State University, where I’ll be moderating a discussion between Chuck D and Yo-Yo about the state of hip-hop. Any suggestions for questions I should ask?

Question:

Do people feel like the conversation about Hip Hop can be pushed from being about the mainstream to being about the grassroots, where it began? Can we speak from a place of marginality (or allow ordinary people to) about the issues we care about in our communities, without all the glitz and glamour of the hypervisual?

I have nothing to ask as I’m sure you’ll be covering everything that needs to be covered,. but…for me…if Yo-Yo disagrees with you on anything, you tell her “Don’t try to play me out, Don’t try to play me out”. Her eyes are dreamy.

Marc between the infatuation with beef and the complete lack of originality when it comes to the music that hits the mainstream I have become very jaded about hip hop so I can’t think of one question to ask either of them but I’ll be curious to hear how the discussion goes.

Chuck, do you think Hip Hop would have evolved differently if Kool Moe Dee had battled Ramelzee instead of Busy Bee? Its argued that Kool Moe Dee, in winning that legendary battle, affirmed the supremacy of lyricism over the ability to “move the crowd”. While Busy Bee was a great “move the crowd” emcee, Ramelzee was better and if he had battled Kool Moe Dee, I truly feel that the contest would have been a draw thus affecting the course of the evolution of Rap.

I graduated from Kent State, you should address some concerns that the Black United Students have zero white members. Also address the diversity of the campus greek life. You’ll see most fraternities and sororities are still segregated. This was always a concern of mine.

Please ask what they can do to help you get another video blog up. I understand the event is over, but maybe you can send them a follow-up e-mail or something. Thank you.

I’m late–I see–but I would’ve wanted you to ask Chuck D to what degree has Flav’s buffoonery and coon-ism affected their friendship.
