Vacation Time
September 4, 2008 by Marc Lamont Hill
Your boy is mentally, spiritually, and physically exhausted. In order to recharge, rather than quit blogging altogether, I’m taking a vacation. Unless something unusual happens, the Barbershop will be closed until Monday September 15, 2008. Until then, feel free to talk amongst yourselves on this post or others. Play nice!

If you did, you would know how grossly these statements were taken out of context, for the sole purpose of COMEDY!!!!
I’m sure there are comments from you and everyone else on this blog, including myself, that if taken from one post made in one specific context, and compared it to another comment made on a totally different post regarding a totally different context, a comedian could exploit a forced and utterly irrelevant contradiction. Tanya,
I have a couple of questions for you and let me preface them by saying this first, I am not even attempting to be argumentative or are trying to make this personal, I’m just really curious as to how you can explain this regarding the aforementioned video:
In reference to the pregnancy of Bristol Palin, Bill O’Reilly made it very clear that teen pregnancy was a personal matter but becomes a policy issue if taxpayers have to support the family and he said nothing disparaging about the Palin family or specifically Palin and her husband as parents in fact he was very polite, supportive and complimentary. Meanwhile a few months back Jamie Lynn Spears gets pregnant and her parents according to him are “pinheads,” how is that not a display of inconsistent analysis? Considering Jamie Lynn is a multi-millionare and certainly won’t need any taxpayer assistance to raise her child why is it acceptable to insult her parents? Why is a not still a personal issue, why the name-calling?
How is it not blatantly sexist according to Dick Morris so say in reference to the media’s dealing with Palin that “this is sexism and a man would never have to deal with this kind of treatment” yet just a few months before that Morris says in reference to Hilary complaining about sexist media treatment “this is what Hilary always does, whenever she gets under fire she retreats under the apron strings.” How is that not sexist? For the record I saw the live broadcast of all of these segments so the context was very clear and precise. Do you honestly see no flaws in this at all?
September 8, 2008 @ 7:56 pm43. Tanya wrote:
DC, my dear,
Thank you very much for raising those very important and astute questions.
But please understand that I don’t take anything, especially reasonable questioning, personally. So although it was a polite thing for you to offer your disclaimer, don’t worry, I never harbor hard feelings anyway.
In response to your questions:
Regarding O’Reilly on teen pregnancy:
If you saw the full segment on why Jamie Lynn’s parents were pinheads – O’Reilly made it clear that Britney is a complete mess. She has a sting of serious problems from here to Timbuktu. Britney has problems with drugs and alcohol and is a “bad parent” herself. NOW their other daughter ends up a pregnant teen. Clearly there is a problem with their parenting if BOTH of their daughters are apparently doing wrong things. That’s why Bill called them pinheads.
If all of Palin’s kids had problems then Bill would call her a pinhead too!
Regarding Dick Morris:
If you saw the whole segment they were talking about whether Palin would be a good mother AND a good VP. No one questions whether a man would be a good father AND a good VP. That was the sexism Morris was talking about.
Hilary however, conveniently claims sexism when moderators ask her the first question in debates. She claimed they were picking on her, b/c she was a woman, and was asking her the FIRST questions to intimidate her b/c she was a woman. That’s ridiculous, and that’s why Morris said she was hiding behind the apron.
As a woman, I understand that if you want to play the boys’ game, you can’t get mad when they test you and throw hard questions at you. Hilary was getting mad b/c they were “testing” her. She should be stronger than that. She claimed to be stronger than most men, yet she runs and hides when they “test” her. That’s what Morris was talking about.
That comedy clip was nothing but that, comedy. Pure spin-ed comedy!

There are thousand of good parents, who have teens that have sex with their boyfriend and end up pregnant.
Bill didn’t call Beyonce’s parents pinheads when Solonge got pregnant at 17.
But Bill is calling Britney’s parents pinheads b/c, obviously, in addition to, and above and beyond Jamie Lynne being a pregnant teen, they are pinheads.

But being to blame for something, and being an overall pinhead parent, is two different things.
I understand that parents can not control every single thing their children do.
I understand that TV and peers, have a great influence on kids.
I understand that kids, like all people, make mistakes.
But making a mistake, and having serious issues are two different things.
I also understand that none of Palin’s children have drug or alcohol addiction, or any serious issues. I understand that none of them have repetitive and severe problems like Britney that can be linked directly to poor parenting.
Therefore, I do not think Palin is a pinhead parent.
But based on Lynne Spears’ long failed track record of poor parenting, she is a pinhead parent.
If you think Spears is not a pinhead parent, that’s your opinion, so fine!
Just understand that Spears being a pinhead it O’Reilly’s opinion and just b/c he doesn’t see Palin as a pinhead, doesn’t mean there is a contradiction. You have to hold people to the same stand, and O’Reilly did just that.
Lynne Spears – 1 daughter completely messed up and 1 daughter a pregnant teen. = pinhead parent.
Sarah Palin – Only 1 daughter pregnant teen, but rest of children on the right path (1 son an honorable solider), plus she has a demanding career. = not a pinhead parent
Again, according to Bill, if you can name one of Palin’s other kids who is completely messed up, then you “win”! Palin is a pinhead too!
If you can’t, then you have to accept a difference between the two as parents. And you have to understand the difference in Bill’s analysis.

Clif, you said that O’Reilly was a hypocrite b/c he called Spears a pinhead and NOT Palin.
(Poor Clif)
I explained to Clif, that based on the same “O’Reilly standard of a pinhead” Palin didn’t fit!
If I said an idiot is someone whose first name begins with a “C” and last name begins with a “H”.
Then I say:
Clif is an idiot!
And then two months later I say:
Ced is a smart guy!
Stupid Sally would say, “Tanya your a hypocrite. You called Clif an idiot, but you call Ced a smart guy! Ced’s first name begins with a “C” too, so according to you, Ced must be an idiot too!”
Then WYLTK, with her sharp fierce self, would point out to Stupid Sally that Tanya only called Cliff an idiot b/c his first name began with a “C” AND, AND, AND his second name began with a “H”! So since Ced’s last name does NOT begin with an “H”, therefore, according to Tanya, Ced is not an idiot.

Comment by clifton harrison — September 4, 2008 @ 6:26 pm
I tried to explain to Clif that a hypocrite is someone who, basically, holds people to different standards, to be short.
I tried to point out to Clif that O’Reilly made it clear that someone is a pinhead parent if they have MORE than 1 child “messed up”!
Lynne Spears has MORE than 1 child “messed up”.
Sarah Palin has ONLY 1 child “messed up”.
Therefore Spears is a pinhead and Palin is not. (according to Bill O’Reilly)
That’s NOT being a hypocrite!!! O’Reilly is holding both women to the SAME standard. Therefore, you can’t call O’Reilly a hypocrite regarding his pinhead parent comment.
Clif called the man a name without having any valid reason to substantiate it.
The discussion is not about what a pinhead parent is, to you, me, or anyone else!
The discussion here is whether or not O’Reilly is a hypocrite for calling Spears a pinhead and Palin not.
September 12, 2008 @ 6:11 pm71. Clifton Harrison wrote:
ahhh, Tanya…I spell it out once more, even tough it’s displayed by the clip, and knowing that you still won’t get it, but here you go:
Bill O’Reilly argued that Palins family life should be judged by the media, that millions of Americans deal with teenage pregnancy, and that it is a personal issue. When it came the spears family, he primarily blamed the parents, calling them “Incredible pinheads”.
So Why aren’t Sarah Palin and her husband considered parents Tanya? Explain that.
I was also saying that personally, i don’t feel that Sarah Palin’s daughters pregnancy is a totally private matter.
“Why is that Clif?”
Because Sarah Palin wants abstinence only taught in schools, which is a policy matter and if she has the possibility of running this country and passing a law like that (but within her own family, that very teaching has not been successful), i feel it is the media’s/press duty to question her about it.
I don’t think bringing it up as a scandal or as grounds for her not being ready to lead the country, but the fact that she believes in abstinence only and that teaching didn’t work in her own family leads me to question her judgement and quite frankly her sanity

(I know you meant to ask why aren’t they *pinhead parents.)
I EXPLAINED THAT! LORD HAVE MERCY! RE-READ the comments!
NONE of Sarah Palin’s other kids have half the problems similar to the drug addict, alcoholic, lunatic ways of Britney Spears.
Every family has 1 “black sheep”. There is often 1 kid who wants to push the limits, be a rebel, etc. But if most of your kids are jacked up, there’s a serious, and yes maybe even a pinhead-like problem with the parents!
AGAIN!!! In order to meet Bill’s qualifications of a pinhead parent, you have to have more than 1 kid doing something wrong. Like I’ve asked you before, Does any of Sarah Palin’s other kids have issues???
So YES, the FACTS are VERY CLEAR!!!!
Second, as I said in comment #134 on the “Open Post”:
Clif,
“…i have no problem with Palin and her daughter being pregnant. My problem is with her idea that abstinence only teaching works when it didnt even work within her own family.”
Well Clif, I must say, that is a very legitimate stance.
If you want to have a discussion about whether or not Abstinence only works, and why it didn’t work with Bristol, then that is an intelligent and important discussion to have.
But for you to waste time and try to call the Republican Party as a whole, hypocrites for requesting people to respect Sarah and Bristol is just down right ridiculous.
Please note that Bill O’Reilly is an INDEPENDANT, and he had a legitimate reason to call Lynne Spears a pinhead. He did not call all parents of pregnant teens pinheads.
So for you, or anyone else, to try and link the whole Republican Party to his comments, or make it a Republican stance that Lynne is a pinhead, and therefore all Republicans are hypocritical in supporting Sarah, is just the most idiotic thing possible.
Don’t be an idiot. Discuss the issues, don’t spin.”

Once again, you don’t understand the argument. It’s not about how maany kids they have that are messed up which determines the parents pinhead status.
Bill O’Reilly argued that Palins family life should be judged by the media, that millions of Americans deal with teenage pregnancy, and that it is a personal issue. When it came the spears family, he primarily blamed the parents, calling them “Incredible pinheads”

oh, and
“Bill O’Reilly argued that Palins family life should not be judged by the media”
When it was Palin’s issue, its off limits because its a family issue, all americans go through it.
A Spears issue, the parents are pnheads.
That’s O’Reillys argument

Clif,
No sweat young child. YOU don’t understand.

YES IT IS!!! Bill made it VERY CLEAR that b/c Britney is “messed up” and still going through lots of mess, and NOW Jamie Lynne becomes pregnant as a teen – the parents are having problems PARENTING, and so, they are pinheads.
Based on ***BILL’S CRITERIA***, it is the number of problems in the family that warrants the parents as pinheads.
This is were context clues and comprehension comes in.
Do you know WHY Bill called Britney and Jamie Lynne’s parents “Incredible Pinheads”?????
Ask yourself WHY he called them that, and then try to figure out if Palin fits that same WHY!!!

You have NOOOO idea what Bill’s argument is.
Maybe if you watched his WHOLE segment you would.
But No, you rather just watch the 5 seconds that a comedian edited for JOKES, and consider that fact.
FYI darling, you can’t take comedians seriously, ok!

I didn’t see a blog on CNN’s Black in America. If I overlooked one tell me where it is. My college just had a discussion on it about 2 weeks ago. I’ve really been wanting to hear other peoples’ opinions on it. I felt it was pretty good though a focus was a little too much on the negative side. I would have liked to see a little more about success in the black community.
