Video of the Day

June 20, 2008 by Marc Lamont Hill

Today’s video of the day comes from Soulja Boy, who recently recorded this video response to Ice T. For those who don’t know, Ice T recently blamed Souljah for “singlehandedly killing hip-hop”.

Ice-T has become the most hilarious dude to me–he’s like a cartoon with a potty mouth, a ponytail and sports a wife with some huge veiny fake boobies. I appreciate his comments…and his ponytail.

Nevermind the other prick.

but on the flipside,

i just wanted to update you all on my mother’s condition.
you guys, she has passed on, her date of passing was 6/7/8.
these last two weeks has been extremely emotional, and exausting for me, so you guys could imagine why i couldn’t get right back. listen, before you guys start feeling all sorry for me, please hold your apologies. i’m extremely honored and blessed to have such a beautiful, loving, wise, and spiritual mother. i couldn’t of ask God for anything more. sometimes i even ask him, why me? what the hell did i ever do to deserve such a woman(angel) in my life? yes she has moved on, but i will forever carry her with me, in my heart, mind, and spirit…she shall live on…you guys, i could go on literally forever about how amazing my mother IS, but there isn’t enough post space on this blog. one of these days, i’ll elaborate a little more on the condition she suffered from, which was systemic lupus…i really just wrote in to update you all on her situation, like i’ve promised. also, i wanted to thank each and every one of you, for all the kind words and prayers. you all are really appreciated(even you garrett). little do you all know, you guys really helped me get through the toughest time of my entire fuckin’ life. right after i made my post to you guys, i went to the hospital to see her, and that’s when i got the news that she was dying, all of your words were right on time!…and i thank you all from the bottom of my soul…i didn’t know what post to deliver the news in, cause shit my mother is a celtic’s fan and i was about to burst all you Laker Lovers bubble yesterday(fuck kobe), but i decided against it…anyway…nan nan a boo boo, those assholes lost!(yes mama, we did it!)…listen, i didn’t write this, to dampen the vibe in this post. by all means, please enjoy the rest of your day and this post. as a matter of fact, roll up a spliff, and toss one back, CELEBRATE! that’s exactly how my beautiful mother would want it!

nuff’ respect
peace and jah guidance.

WYLTK God nevers gives us more than we can bear. I lost my father at 16 to cancer and remember getting mad at the fact that mine was taken away while others still have their dads, no matter how imperfect they may be, and are ungreatful. I still can’t believe I have gotten thru, but one things guaranteed, you will never forget her. May God grant you and your family grace and peace.

I admit that I appreciate Ice T for being so outspoken as a rapper, but how can a man that was responsible for the degradation of women in the black community, claim that a teenager is responsible for killing hip hop? hip hop was dying before souljah boy was born, haha. The old school rappers want to blame the young rappers, when honestly they are upset that the young rappers are able to make more money. Personally I think that every rapper that focused on capitalizing their talent by “crossing over” are responsible for the death of hip hop. Kinda like a domino effect.

I’m actually proud of Souljah Boy! He is very young and he singlehandedly created a career for himself. He erected his family from poverty and gives millions of people a smile and a song to dance to.

Souljah raised a very mature point; “if you feel hip hop is dead, revive it. Give me pointers.”

As far as I’m concerned, Ice-T has always been a pathetic case. Who the hell is he to talk? Ice-T singlehandedly killed the concept of a respectable human being.

we can all talk about soulja boy coming up and getting his money, but why should we respect that? all he did was make a catchy hook, a little dance, and some slang that turned out to be raunchy. that’s not that hard to do. but, he did make some good (and hilarious) points about ice-t. i’ve often wondered why t went from fuck the police to playin one on tv (i’ve had similar thoughts about ice cube and those family movies).

i think it’s clear from both these guys that they don’t give a damn about hip hop…soulja said he won’t be rappin at 50, and t has become a caricature of what aliens might think a talented performer is. nonetheless, the video is good for some giggles.

LMAO, ya boy got jokes… kinda funny.

Nonetheless like Ronk & DCI74 I was completely turned off from this dude when I found out what “Superman that Hoe” really meant and when my boyfriend’s 2 year old “Yahh’ed” me when she wasnt feeling what I had to say.

Ringtone rappers like SB wouldnt be so bad if they accepted the fact that they are infact gimmicy rappers and are no where near the level or skill set of real MCs. If they themselves accepted that position and played that role witout getting in the way of real artist, I think they’d get a lot more respect and I’d be more inclined to supress a cringe and not reach for the radio as their “songs” played.

23. KaMo wrote:

Oh yeah, Ice-T it too damn old to be talking about some child trying to get his money. For that alone, I’ve lost respect for him. That blow up doll he calls a wife doesnt help his respect level either.

June 23, 2008 @ 2:50 pm

24. DCI74 wrote:

Exactly KaMo. See the problem is simple, rappers like SB actually think they are MCs so they see no difference between themselves and a Nas, Common, Scarface, Slick Rick or Rakim. They completely missed that class on the difference between rappers and MCs and the worst is that the casual fan has no idea either.

June 23, 2008 @ 10:59 pm

25. Tanya wrote:

DC – glad to see you reference Nas!

Kamo – You got “Yahh’ed” by a 2 year old??? LMAO That is too funny. How do you respond to that??? I don’t know what I would say to a 2 year old who “Yahh’ed” me. Do you laugh and brush it under the rug or do you sit them down and attempt to reason with them?

BTW – How does a 2 year old even know what “Yahh” means and how and when to use it??? It’s going to be challenging to bring kids into this world!

Tanya – this little girl is not your typical 2 year old, as they say “she’s been here before.” Anyway, it took all of my strength not to shake her little tail. We talked about it and she knows not to do it again.

She has older cousins that think its cute to teach her that type of thing. She’s smart so she applies it where she see’s fit. She got it right that time, lol.
