Video of the Day
November 25, 2008 by Marc Lamont Hill
Today’s video of the day is “Heartless” by Kanye West. I just copped his new album and I’m not sure what I think yet. Thoughts?

Man I got it early too and already gave it away. I just can’t get with that Auto-Tuner on every single track, which is why I also can’t get with T-Pain or Akon’s synthesized vocals. I give Ye credit for making an attempt at something different but I want to hear singers sing naturally not rappers using technology to become singers, that’s corny to me.

I downloaded it last week. The album stinks! At first I really liked ‘Love Lockdown’ but after hearing it with the entire album, I hate that song too!

Oh, DC, I couldn’t agree more. The vocoder in hip-hop thing is really buggin’ me. I didn’t like it in the first place. Stevie Wonder use to them in some of acts back in day (like before I was born “back in the day”), but it sounded neat and thankfully underused. I’m a Kanye supporter, but this track is limp dick and is quite disappointing, He’s a brilliant producer and flows kinda funny but this is garbage.

zak-you sit at home all day in your mama’s house blogin? and did you just use the term “limp dick”? aren’t you the one who said you get depressed after you masturbate? I think you have E.D. and are reaching out… do you need a sexual intervention? I know this really great ‘Sexpert’

I feel you zak and just for clarification, even though the sound is similar the Vocoder and Auto-Tuner are completely different. The Vocoder was made popular by Peter Frampton and later by Roger and works by guiding the voice through an actual instrument being play simultaneously and allows you to manipulate your voice through playing an instrument. Frampton used the guitar and Roger used the keyboards. Auto-Tuner is what Ye, Akon and T-Pain use, which is just recording software that lets you remove the vocal impurities and give perfect pitch. But you can over pitch the vocals and that’s what gives it that electronic sound. Bottom line, you have to be able to play an instrument to use a Vocoder but you only have to be able to use a computer to mess with Auto-Tuner.

If you remember the episode of The Cosby Show with Stevie Wonder (you know the one when Denise hit his limo and he invited the family to the studio and they recorded a song) he used the Vocoder.

DC: Ohhhh, never knew the difference. Thanks for the schooling.
Anita: Well, I mostly blog at a coffee shop. Mom’s house is little too far away. You know, I take Improv classes up in New York, and somehow in every skit I’m in, there’s always penis or vagina humor involved. I’m a grown ass kid, not sexually deficient.
Kanye: I like Q-Tip’s album better.

When good hip hop “artists” get fed up with the state of hip hop (as many of us have), they release their weird/eccentric album. Some succeed, some do not. We have seen this with Common’s horrible Electric Circus, and Andre 3000’s great Love Below. Now all Kanye has to do is date Erykah Badu, and before you know it he will return to making real hip hop hits.
