Video of the Day

May 13, 2009 by Marc Lamont Hill

Today’s video of the day comes from Joe Budden, who expresses his concerns about Vibe Magazine’s “Greatest Rapper” rankings. Although I’m not a big Budden fan, he’s got a point!

He does have a point EXCEPT he shouldn’t be on the list at all. And since when does Vibe have any credibility to be talking about rap at all? They’re an R&B magazine and not even a good one at that.

I also share his sentiments, wholeheartedly. In fact, I would’ve been a lot more impolitic about how I felt than he was. Effin ridiculous! How did we lose creative and critical authority over our own creation?

I really don’t like “best ever” lists because they don’t make sense. You can’t have a “best of” anything because time doesn’t stop once a list is completed whether music, sports, movies or anything for that matter. Joell not being on that list is ridiculous and there are a few names that shouldn’t be on there at all like Bow Wow, Hammer and Melle Mel which makes no sense. However to single out VIBE when lists like these crop up damn near every other month from allhiphop.com to MTV, it can be said that all the lists are biased and not a true reflection of skill and artistry that’s why I avoid them altogether. There is no foremost authority anywhere that could put together a list people would agree on because people have different definitions of what makes a good rapper and therefore everyone will have a different list. A person who has never listened to The Roots would have no idea how adept a lyricist Black Thought is if the epitome of lyricism to them is Lil Wayne.

In my opinion, any true Hip Hop head should be able to appreciate Joe Budden’s style and lyrical content as well as his sentiment on this “Best of Rap” list. It sounds to me that on some level he was responding to the gross commercialization of Hip Hop and Rap, and the way that the selling of Hip Hop’s soul has skewed the way that its artist are ranked and critiqued.

Jasmine, if you like to hear a nigga complain, you’ll appreciate Joe Budden’s lyrical content. He’s a good rapper but his subject matter has got to change. No place in hiphop for Emo rap.

Joe Budden is hilarious. The only thing more funny then him being incredulous is him trying to do math. I’m better than half of the of the folks on here… 64?.. er 50… lmao!

He realized that there’s no way he’s better than 64 of those rappers so he checked himself. Method Man already called him out on the radio.
