What’s The Science? (2009 Grammy Awards)
February 9, 2009 by Marc Lamont Hill

Due to travel/vacation, I’ve been away from TV for the last week. Can someone fill me in on last night’s Grammy Awards? Who were the best acts? Who got the major awards? Who looked ridiculous? What’s the Science?

Dr. Marc, I came in & out of the show, but here’s my 2 cents:
WHITNEY: Was the show’s first presenter. Presented J-Hud w/her award for R&B Album of the Year. She looked great, has filled out a bit, but I think my girl still has crack residue in her head cuz she was talkin’ crazy again…
J-HUD: Looked fabulous. Sang “You Pulled Me Through”. Backed up by a gospel choir. Almost “lost it” at the end but she fought back the tears… Poor poor baby…
STEVIE WONDER/JONAS BROS.: WTF.
THE ‘RAP PACK’: WTF. Kanye/TI/Lil’ Wayne/Jay-Z and some pregnant lady. I couldn’t make out shit they were saying; it was all just so inaudible. Kanye’s afro-mullet is very thick. Jay-Z has hair issues too–is he growing his hair out for something??
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE: I hate him.
That’s all I saw. The end.

What’s up Chgo!!! Love, baby!
I “missed” the Grammies yet again. Thank God. Awards shows are totally meaningless to me, except for what songs I’ll have to tolerate on the same 5 songs, 15 times a day, for 3 months on the radio. Yo man, funk that! Get a new DJ.

Why is no one talking about Chris Brown and the problem he seems to have with his hands?

Yes, yes, ChgoSista…I thought Whitney was still on that powda too…maybe she was nervous.
Blaxx, I want to talk about Chris B and Rhi Rhi too!

Well Doc…Chris Brown got an unusually premature award for Best “hit” 2009.

Whitney got rave reviews for her performance at Clive’s annual pre-Grammys party. Powder, rocks or not she killed it.

LOL @ Bitter Brother…..
The details are so vague about CB and Rihanna….well maybe not so much, he beat her ass….ok, simple enough….I thought this would affect his fan base..but as i peruse the blogs with a fine tooth comb, the young ones are really buying his innocent boy image that he sold to millions of naive and brainwashed children….I keep reading statements like, “I dont believe he did it”, “thats not like CB, I’m going to stand by him regardless”, “maybe Rihanna provoked him, its her fault”, oh and my favorite,”rihanna is a snitch”….WTF!!!??? Really, people? This is our youth of tomoro? smh….and Jesus wept!

Chris Brown…baby Ike….I do not believe it. Those
Grammies were bad,too many awards went to rock and
lite country crap,….I thought rock and country had they
own awards shows.

i love the grammy’s b/c negros always gotta act a fool & treat it like the BET awards show when in public regardless of the venue.
-MIA proved my point why i refuse to listen to her. ppl can say whatever they want ’bout britney spears, but MIA needs to be seriously questioned regarding her parental choices (and also her fashion choices. didn’t get memo lil kim version of bumble bee maternity body suits were in style)
-cold play is the *ish!
-really thought estele ft. kanye “american boy” would’ve gotten song of the year
-lil wayne really does get uglier each year
-i pray the truth comes out about c.brown and rhianna incident
-j.hudson is inspirational beyond measure. she looked amazing.
-when will that beatle guy (john something…blanking now) get the lifetime achievement award and call it a day?

I like M.I.A.’s music, but I agree that she should have been laid up in a hospital somewhere as opposed to bouncing on stage on her DUE DATE. I didn’t know she was pregnant so that in and of itself was a shock, but her maternity outfit was even more shocking.
All in all, the Grammys were an EPIC FAIL… The matchups were terrible (Stevie Wonder and the Jonas Brothers. Seriously?), Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift duet, and Lupe Fiasco wins nothing. I feel a boycott coming on. The only highlight was Jennifer Hudson, and that was over in the first half hour.

First of all it should read “their” own awards; not “they.”
Second, the Grammys honor recordings. Every style, genre, type of musical catagory possible and non-musical recordings as well. There is no exclusion. All it has to be is a “recording” and the Academy can consider the submission for nomination.
Hence, President Obama has won two Grammys for the “recordings” he did of his two books. Would you suggest that that type of recording also be excluded along with rock and country?

i thought the grammys were good.
Whitney is not on that crack rock. She was just drunk as a skunk. And she got some work done on her face.
i liked the stevie wonder/jonas bros. collab. it was fun.
Al Green outshined JT.
\and Kanye never needs to wear a sequence blazer ever again in life. I’ve tollerated the hair, but the jacket no. I wont be surprised if he comes out in a ruffled blouse and Prince heeled boots next. . . .

For years i was pissed off at Stevie Wonder because i thought he wrote “Superstition” for Jeff Beck and then yanked the rug out of JB until i found out Jeff HAD the riff….
SEEing Stevie housenigroing it to the Jonas Brothers on said song thought…WTmotherF!!!!
Alas…THIS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBpSeyk1z4o is all that remains of the ORIGINAL:(

If M.I.A. had given birth on stage, I would’ve given her a standing ovation in my room, pajamas a’blazing. That’s entertainment…and I believe that child would come out in technicolor.

I can’t believe Jazmine Sullivan didn’t win any awards. She was nominated for five and came out empty handed. Her album, Fearless, was one of the best albums of 2008. Period. I am disappointed.

Never, ever seen a pregnant woman wear tights before. That baby is gona come out singing and dancing. I think Estelle was kind of cute. I was waiting all evening to see Rihanna………….and, I am still waiting.

Indeed KT, Jazmine Sullivan is one of the best singers most people have never heard of so for her to win at least one award would have been the perfect jolt to her career. But I think her talent will be heard eventually, she’s just too good.

Or she’ll fade into obscurity like everyone else Missy brings into the game
